We asked our Winemaker, Emma Garner, what inspired her to craft a new Small Lot Riesling. Here’s what she had to say:
“In early 2013 I was in a Riesling breakout session in Seattle with international winemakers. One from Germany (home of the amazing Riesling produced from the Mosel) inspired me to try a new style of small lot winemaking from our Thirty Bench vineyard. And so the fun began…
We picked a portion of our Thirty Bench Triangle vineyard very early in the harvest to maintain the acidity, and we divided the juice, which was hand-picked and hand-sorted, and gently pressed into two separate fermentation vessels. One portion went into stainless steel tank and inoculated with a yeast strain called W15. The balance of the juice filled two old puncheons (500L oak barrels) and was fermented wild, meaning the natural yeast from the vineyard was left on the grapes as the only catalyst to fermentation.
After fermentation was complete, we experimented with blending the wines. The two wines were great by themselves, but exceptional after they were blended together.”
